  • Hyperventilation
rdfs:comment
  • Hyperventilation is classified as abnormal, prolonged deep breathing that causes a depletion of carbon dioxide, a fall in blood pressure, and possible fainting. Hyperventilation is a common cause of shallow water blackout.
  • Hyperventilation is a condition where the lungs have too low a concentration of carbon dioxide because they are expelling carbon dioxide faster than the body can produce it. This in turn results in there being too little carbon dioxide in the bloodstream, which the body compensates for by making the blood more alkaline. This in turn sets off several other possible reactions including dizziness, tingling in the lips, hands or feet, weakness, fainting or even seizures.
  • Hyperventilation was the condition of rapid respiration caused by anxiety or panic. In 2371, The Doctor tried to calm down a hyperventilating Neelix while the latter was using holographic lungs to breathe. (VOY: "Phage") Later that year, to explain his presence at Kes' surprise birthday party, The Doctor told her that surprises could cause, among other things, acute hyperventilation. (VOY: "Twisted") In 2374, The Doctor told a suffocating Harry Kim and Tom Paris to breathe slowly lest they hyperventilate. (VOY: "Demon")

(VOY: "Demon") In 2375, The Doctor gave Neelix a mild sedative to control his urge to hyperventilate while the Talaxian recovered from his nihiliphobia-induced panic attack. (VOY: "Night") In 2376, when Neelix told Tuvok that just thinking about the fate of the crew of the Salvoxia made him short of breath, the Vulcan suggested that he think more pleasant thought to avoid hyperventilating. This in turn sets off several other possible reactions including dizziness, tingling in the lips, hands or feet, weakness, fainting or even seizures. Hyperventilation can be induced voluntarily (and often is by person diving deep underwater) or can be an involuntary response. A common cause is severe anxiety or stress. Treatment should focus on the underlying cause. For example, if it is caused by hypoxia, oxygen should be administered. If it is caused by anxiety, counselling is usually effective.
