The Republic Navy decided to strike as soon as possible. Scrambling all naval assets in the area, the Navy carried out a hastily prepared attack against the Separatist armada. However, unknown to them, this was actually a trap by the Separatists to take out a portion of the Republic's ships, in preparation for the planned attack on Coruscant. The Separatists outnumbered the Republic assault force, which was counting on surprises to be the factor that would allow them to win. The battle proved to be a victory for the Confederate fleet. When the Republic ships entered the system, the Separatists were where the spies reported they were, but in reality they were fully prepared for this attack and began moving to intercept the Republic fleet. The Republic commander took this as a sign of urgency on part of the Separatists and continued with the attack. The CIS armada destroyed the majority of the Republic fleet in the ensuing engagement. The battle was also was notable for usage of kamikaze vulture droids by the CIS. The Republic was shocked to hear of this horrendous defeat, and it demoralized the Navy as a whole. Much Separatist propaganda was made based on the victory at Pammant, and the commanding officer of the Separatist trap, Vice Admiral Melek Veyer, was portrayed as a "Hero of the Confederacy".
