| abstract | - The Coruscant Space Guard existed for a brief period of time just before and near the beginning of the Clone Wars. It was a force created by Supreme Justice Palpatine to provide space-based protection to the planet of Coruscant. At its creation, the Space Guard recruited heavily from trained pilots and commanders in both the Republic Navy and the Republic Guard. Much of the funding for the Space Guard came from Palpatine himself. When the Navy and the Guard came under the control of the Unified Command, the Space Guard was dissolved and its members put to work in their respective militaries. The ownership of those ships provided to the Space Guard by Palpatine is unclear. Practically, they are under the control of the Unified Command, but as the command legally consists of nothing more than a council which controls both branches of the military, some speculate that those ships, as well as others, legally belong to Palpatine himself.
