  • An STEV resembled a sleek teardrop, with four 'prongs' raising from the top. Constructed from a double-folded layer of Mandalorian Iron, and featuring an underlayer of lead foil and a ceramic skin, these pods were surprisingly durable. The internal ceramic skin and layer of lead foil provided a decent amount of protection from the extreme heat generated during the drop through a atmosphere, but the passenger compartment still became almost intolerably hot, and it was not uncommon for the passenger to literally be 'cooked' alive during a drop. Also, the stock model featured no shield generator and, Mandalorian Iron hull notwithstanding, they were still extremely vulnerable to AA fire.

abstract
Despite this, STEVs were a favored form of planetary assault by Ash'rak warriors. Due to their small size and the high speed at which they were launched, an STEV was remarkably difficult to acquire and destroy, and even if a pod was hit, only a single warrior would be killed, compared to the dozens that might be killed if a dropship or lander was destroyed. The pods were equipped with both a metallic drag chute, which deployed for a short period upon entering the atmosphere, to steady the descent and help keep the pod on course as well as providing some deceleration. Further deceleration was typically accomplished by a series of powerful repulsor coils located along the underside of the pod, slowing the pod from terminal velocity just minutes before landing. Even with this deceleration, however, the G-forces exerted on the passenger, not to mention the force of landing, were extreme, and could easily kill less durable species. The Ash'rak's enhanced physiology, though, was such that a warrior was able to resist such extremes far better than an ordinary soldier.
