  • Gassan is the name of a mountain in Unshu. Around the mid-Kamakura period, there was a swordsmith who hailed from there, using only the name Gassan, and no first name. Gassan had started a school for his uncommon (but beautiful) making of the kantei points and hamons on his swords in Osaka, but the school and his tradition died out in the early Edo period. In 1836, Gassan Sadayoshi revived the school of Gassan sword making after his master's (Suishinshi Masahide) death in 1825. It is possible this katana is a tribute to either Gassan, from the Kamakura period or Sadayoshi himself.
  • A sword forged by a Japanese sword smith named Gassan, who is said by some to have been an oni demon. It is said that the Gassan has both spiritual and demonic powers, and that it chooses who is worthy to wield it. If an unworthy warrior grips the sword, it will turn on him instead. Gassan first appeared as an optional weapon for Mitsurugi in Soulcalibur II.

It is said that the Gassan has both spiritual and demonic powers, and that it chooses who is worthy to wield it. If an unworthy warrior grips the sword, it will turn on him instead. Arthur wields a katana named Gassan that has a thicker blade than is normal for katanas and lacks a scabbard. There is no information provided about it, but according to its description in Soulcalibur II, it is a sword forged by a Japanese sword smith named Gassan, who is rumored to be an oni demon. It is said that the Gassan has both spiritual and demonic powers, and that it chooses who is worthy to wield it, turning against those it deems unworthy of using it. Surprisingly, the Gassan has no special effects whatsoever on Arthur. Arthur and his weapon are possible references to the legendary King Arthur. For example, Gassan, like the Sword in the Stone, is apparently able to decide who wields it. Additionally, Arthur seems to have lost Gassan's scabbard, possibly in reference to how King Arthur lost the scabbard of Excalibur, which was said to protect its bearer from any harm. Gassan first appeared as an optional weapon for Mitsurugi in Soulcalibur II.
