  • The Chatham Islands, officially the Kingdom of the Chatham Islands (Maori: Kīngitanga o Wharekauri), are an islands nation in southern Oceania. Its capital is Waitangi.
  • Earliest known settlers were Moriori. The islands became part of New Zealand in 1842. In the 1850s other Maoris invaded and enslaved the locals, who had no concept of fighting. Chief town is Waitangi with a population of about 200; about 500 residents elsewhere make up the total, easily the smallest of any local government territory in the country. Its economy is largely based on fishing.
  • The flag of the Chatham Islands was designed by a former New Zealand police officer named Logan Alderson. It depicts the island with the sun rising in the background.
