This unfortunate incident took place moments after it was prophesied at the hands of Devil Ray, when the Legion of Doom raided the temple of Nanda Parbat. Deadman possessed the body of Rampage and attacked the Legion, but he was exorcised by Tala. The Legion stole the Heart of Nanda Parbat, a mystical totem that contained the souls of hundreds monks. Upon this, the deity-guide Rama Kushna informed Deadman that he had to retrieve the Heart to restore the monks' souls; otherwise they'd be trapped in-between realms forever. Deadman sought out the Justice League's help, and after briefing the heroes using Superman's body, they headed off to Gorilla City, where Grodd was moving in. Deadman managed to shut down the city's force field to let the Leaguers in. When he spotted Devil Ray, Deadman entered Wonder Woman's body to take his revenge. He thrashed Devil Ray within an inch of his life, but the memory of his Master prevented him from taking it any further. He then used Atomic Skull's body to help stop Grodd's plans. However, later on when Devil Ray attempted to kill Wonder Woman, Deadman possessed Batman, picked up a fallen gun and shot Devil Ray, who was thrust into a panel of wires, unintentionally killing him. Shortly after, Rama Kushna informed Deadman that his reckless actions upset the scales of karma, even though he was successful in restoring the monks' souls. Deadman still needs to carry on with his work on Earth to balance the scales much to his dismay.

While in a body in addition to any physical strength or powers his host might have Deadman is capable of using great fighting skill and nimble reflexes regardless of the any lack speed or fighting prowess said body normally be restricted by. Boston Brand was a trapeze performer in a circus who was murdered by an assassin. His violent and seemingly unprovoked death caused Boston to come back as a ghost, leaving confused about his death and his state of existence as an undead being in general. Boston found several new rules applied to him as a ghost; Boston found he could not move objects in the physical world however he also could not be stopped by things like walls, earth or gravity, he found he could not change his clothing, leaving him stuck wearing his acrobats' tights and white rubber mask he used for the performances and he found that short of certain psychics and mystics he could not be heard seen or sensed in anyway by normal people, however such an issue could be circumvented through his new ability to possess people.Once Boston had grown accustom to his new state he focused on solving his own murder and took up the mantle "Deadman" in his search. Deadman eventually found the person who killed him, a man called Hook, who was part of Ra' al Ghul's League of Assassins, as it turned out Boston's death was not personal but rather just a rite of passage for Hook to prove himself to the League. Deadman spared Hook's life and was more or less content just with the knowledge of what had happened to him and went to rest in peace...and then found he still couldn't. Boston was contacted by Rama Kushna, a demi-goddess who represented karma. Deadman was in a rather unique position as a ghost who had resolved his unfinished business without being ruled by sorrow or vengeance and as such had the opportunity to make right various other karmic imbalances, a position the forces that be were quite insistent he exploit for the sake of cosmic balance. And so with Rama Kushna as his contact Deadman went throughout the world of the living preventing catastrophe's, resolving events that were never supposed to have happened in the first place or helping beings of great spiritual significance with the promised his reward being a proper death when he was done. Deadman went through many overseers rotating out from Rama Kushna to various mystics giving him guidance, He has been a close companion of Constantine and even a member of the Black Lantern Corps eventually. Eventually Deadman was given his reward, however far form being eternal rest as he thought it turned out he was granted the ability to come back to life. Deadman is part of DC's universal rebirth of their issues called The New 52, in it Hook is redone as an over the hill mobster who murdered Boston to reprove his skill as criminal but is spared by Deadman when he finds him because of not wanting to put his family through the lose.

Ultimately, Boston found out the truth about his murder and came to accept his role as one who intervenes in mortals' lives.Various Missions Over the course of several years, Rama Kushna has had Deadman confront the sorcerer Caldera during multiple times. Due to this, he's altered the fate of the souls of several deceased superheros. Two of them are Flash (Barry Allen) and Robin (Jason Todd). During the Robin incident, he tried to possess the Joker, but was driven out by the man's insanity.Youth and Hell In the Sins of Youth incident, Deadman was one of the dozens of heroes reduced to a pre-teen age by Klarion the Witch Boy, and an alien machine owned by Doiby Dickles. He's still the same spirit, but now has a small "d" on his chest. He assisted "Secret" in confronting Teekl, Klarion's companion, in an effort to restore everyone. He also joined in the fight against mystically created, and mystically altered, villains. During the Day of Judgment incident, Boston Brand traveled with a group of heroes to the frozen wastelands of Hell. Their goal was to restart the demonic fires, thus recalling all the demons from the earthly plane. An accident stranded Brand and the others under the frozen waters of the River Styx. This forced them to live out what was to them, Hell. To survive this situation, Brand concentrated on the pain from the sharpshooter's bullet. This survival tactic gave him an epiphany... "he needed to die in order to learn how to live." The corporeal remains of Boston Brand were recently raised by a Black Lantern Ring making him one of the of the Black Lantern Corps. Deadman, having newly learned of Blackest Night attempted to possess his corpse but was unable to control its actions and was forced to leave the body due to the agony involved. He did however receive impressions of what was going on in Blackest Night and was able to inform the Lanterns on how to defeat Nekron. He was one of twelve individuals resurrected by the power of the white light, startled to find himself among the living once more. Following the Blackest Night, Boston is now the only person still in possession of a White Lantern Ring. The White Entity reveals to Boston that it is dying and his task is to find the chosen one who will take over for the Entity. Boston begins to search for the chosen one with the help of Hank Hall and Dawn Granger, the latter of which Boston falls in love with. While searching for the chosen one, Deadman's ring reaches 100% and transforms him into a White Lantern, transporting him to Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The Entity tells them that in order to reclaim their lives, they need to learn to live apart from each other as they value love over life. The couple refuses to be separated again and the Entity says "So be it", reducing them to white dust in front of Deadman's eyes.
