Synopsis
  • For a while, Kit Ryan waits in her empty apartment, mentally preparing herself for a moment she's been thinking of for a while. She knows that it will come as a heavy blow to her boyfriend John Constantine, but it needs to be done. When John arrives, she explains that she will be returning to Belfast for good. She also, doesn't want to be with him anymore. He promised to keep the darker side of his life out of his life with her, and he failed. Regardless of whether he intended to or not, he couldn't keep the two lives separate, and she suffered as a result. John tries to explain how he needs her, and how he's never felt this way about anyone in his life. Her cold response angers him, and she in turn becomes angry. Firmly, she states that he can finish out the week in her flat, but she will not be staying. Angrily, he leaves. As he steps outside, she throws his suitcase and belongings out the window after him. He tries to drown his sorrow with a pint or nine at a pub, but his sadness threatens to show itself on his face, and he struggles to hide it. A group of younger men spot him and one of them remarks at how sad he looks, derisively. Turning his depression to anger, John decides to make an example of them. He becomes unnecessarily violent, and draws the ire of the pub's proprietor, as well as the attention of Chas Chandler, who happens to be passing by. After trying to get the pub owner to let John go without calling the police and winding up with a fist in the face, Chas takes John into his cab and takes him home. He presses John for answers about what he is upset about, and realize the depth of his friend's pain when he hears it. Even so, he fails to be comforting, and John bitterly dismisses him. In a rage, Chas begins beating his friend up, shoving his face into the toilet as revenge for all the times he was taken advantage of. Now, John is friendless and loveless, apart from several bottles of whisky. He had got back into his dealings with demons in order to stay alive so that he would still be around to be with Kit. Unfortunately, those efforts are exactly what drove her away. He should have just given it all up for her. Instead, he ruined everything, because he's afraid of love. While John drunkenly passes out on a grave stone in the cemetery, Kit begins her journey back to Ireland.
