Starting 24th in the field, Barker ran a respectable race and wound up finishing 20th. He was able to improve on that later in the year at Langhorne, piloting his ride into the 16th position. Barker's other four races came in 1954, during which Barker had a number of struggles. It start off on the bad foot quickly for Barker, having his car overheat and finish 58th in his season debut at Daytona Beach Road Course. He also struggled at Linden, finishing 32nd before ending his career with midpack runs of 18th at Mechanicsburg and 23rd at Morristown.
