The weapon has, at minimum, a 25 round magazine at T1, outlasting the 2nd Tier LR pistol (which has 11 rounds), this gives the LR SMG a clip advantage over the pistol, whilst retaining a tight bullet spread. LR SMG are accurate at the ranges required up to 140 metres max, mean that the VLR pistol has an √2 = 42 % more maximum hit range (200). Some consider it requires less skill to use whilst remaining almost as effective. On top you can spend some Hero Points in Burning Bullets which can't be used with long range pistols.
