He was born in Bastrop, Texas as the son of Jim Gentry and Elizabeth Franklin Overton. Richard Overton married twice but never had any children. He enlisted in the military on 3 September 1942 and served in the South Pacific until 1945, having advanced to the rank of Sergeant at the time of leaving.
