| abstract | - The Numakage (沼影; Literally meaning "Swamp Shadow") are the leaders of Kawagakure.They are generally acknowledged as the strongest in the village, although ideology and renown plays a large part in their being chosen for the position. In Kawagakure, generally, the new Numakage is selected by the current Numakage upon their retirement, but if the old Numakage dies or is incapacitated before being able to do so, the Water Daimyō will appoint a Numakage Candidate upon the recommendation of the Kawa council and the Water Daimyō council. Afterwards, the candidate will need to be approved by the jōnin of the village to become officially Numakage.
