  • James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, later known as the Winter Soldier, is a villain turned supporting protagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially a close friend of Captain America, Barnes seemingly died during in World War II. Although presumed dead, Bucky's body was in truth found by HYDRA who brainwashed him into becoming the Winter Soldier, a deadly assassin under HYDRA's control. Despite HYDRA's influence over the Winter Solider, Captain America manages to reach through to Bucky during HYDRA's attack on Washington. Now aware that he is more than just a HYDRA assassin, Bucky flees from Washington. Months later, Helmut Zemo uses the controversy surrounding the Winter Soldier (revealed that he murdered Howard and Maria Stark) to drive the Avengers apart, resulting in a battle between fractions led by Captain America and Tony Stark. Eventually, Bucky decides that it is best for him to return to cryo-sleep until his identity can be fully restored and is frozen in Wakanda. He was portrayed by Sebastian Stan.
  • Sergeant James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a former soldier of the 107th Infantry Regiment and the childhood best friend of Steve Rogers. As World War II was escalating, he was recruited to become a member of the Howling Commandos. During the time between 1943 and the end of the war in 1945, they had attacked and disabled many HYDRA bases. In the midst a fight on a HYDRA train, Barnes was attacked and promptly plummeted off the side of the train. He was then presumed to be deceased, though unbeknownst to his teammates Barnes had actually survived, albeit with the loss of his left arm. Brainwashed and armed with a new cybernetic limb, Barnes ultimately became an enhanced HYDRA operative known as the Winter Soldier. Over the next several decades he would eliminate anyone who posed a threat to HYDRA, including his former ally Howard Stark. Between missions Barnes would be put into a cryogenic stasis, due to his instability. Eventually, when he was ordered by HYDRA leader Alexander Pierce to assassinate S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, the Winter Soldier was confronted by his old friend, Steve Rogers, triggering him to begin remembering his prior life. In the aftermath of the Battle at the Triskelion, the Winter Soldier went on the run from HYDRA on a self-imposed mission to remember his past and end his violent history. However, during this time Barnes was accused of murdering the King of Wakanda, causing the Black Panther to engage him in a vengeance-driven pursuit. Barnes was saved by Captain America, sparking the Avengers Civil War as he also became a target for Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross and Iron Man. When Iron Man learned that the Winter Soldier had killed his family, Barnes was once again saved by Rogers as it was revealed that Helmut Zemo had organized the entire civil war between the Avengers as revenge for incidentally killing his family a year prior during the Battle of Sokovia. Barnes was then taken to Wakanda, where he chose to be cryogenically frozen until his mind could be restored of the mental programming implanted by HYDRA.
  • Sargent James Buchanan Barnes is the tritagonist from Captain America: The First Avenger turned secondary antagonist from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but at the end, he redeems himself by saving his friend Steve Rogers. Bucky will returns in Captain America: Civil War. Bucky was Captain America's best friend and helper during the Second World War, and during a fight on board a train, Bucky will come presumed dead, but will be saved by HYDRA that will transform him into a super soldier. In this, as Winter Soldier, Bucky become enemy of Captain America, but when Steve will be life threatening, Bucky will save him, something which made him returned to his past good self. While the brainwash that he endured from HYDRA mostly worn off since reunited with Steve, he is still considered as threat by the government where he ended up trapped in the conflict between the fractured factions of Avengers. Aside the fact that Zemo has framed him for the bombing that kills King T'Chaka of Wakanda (where the actual bombers were "other" Winter Soldiers that HYDRA created from other people aside Bucky himself) and responsible for death of Tony Stark's parents while still evil, it's revealed that HYDRA members whom brainwashed him knew that he would returned to his good and noble self someday and anticipated this through a certain procedure during his brainwashing: He would subconsciously obeyed their orders should they said certain trigger words to him. Aware with how complex the brainwashing procedure that HYDRA done on him and a cure was required to restore order on his mind, he voluntarily led himself frozen until the said cure invented.
