Both Tyrrell drivers finished in the top ten, but were subsequently disqualified due to technical infringements by the team. Polesitter, Nelson Piquet, had been running in a strong podium position until a Turbo failure forced the World Champion to retire twelve laps from the end. The result allowed Prost to extend his Drivers' Championship lead over Derek Warwick to eleven points, with Arnoux and De Angelis a further three adrift. McLaren-TAG also extended their Constructors' Championship lead over Ferrari to 14 points.
