He was a well respected man, and was creating doubt in the movement, which made the local Insurrectionist leaders attempting to gain momentum, angry. On Maria's 6 birthday, 5 men invaded her and her father's home. Among the few men, one of them was the local Insurrectionist leader Vladimir Vlacic, who personally despised Mathew. Upon breaking in to the Thompson's home, they would take hold of Mathew and Maria and Begin to torture them. In this process, Maria would loose her eyes to Vladimir's knife, but within moments of this particular move, police forces would began to descend on the home. In their escape Mathew would be killed before fleeing, and Maria was left to bleed out. The police forces would be able to save Maria's life and capture 3 of the 5 men. Vladimir and one of his men would escape. In the Hospital, an ONI operative would find Maria and take her. She would have her eyes replaced with artificial ones, and later be added to the Spartan III Gamma Company Pool.
