She became the oldest person in Japan following the death of the anonymous resident of Tokyo on 27 September 2015, and is the last Japanese person born in the 19th century. Tajima was born in Araki, an area of what was then Wan Village, in the westernmost part of Kikaijima Island, Kagoshima prefecture. She currently resides in Kikai, located on the same island in the prefecture of Kagoshima. She has 9 children (7 sons and 2 daughters), 28 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
