He quickly grew up on the streets and got a reputation with the local police as a 'rough one' or 'trouble maker' from a young age. He was not exactly the biggest or strongest of his age group but he possessed speed, a martial prowess and situational awareness rarely seen in a child the age of 6. These qualities were picked up on by ONI when a police report regarding an aggressive incident involving 8 children was reported on 'SATCOM'. Reportedly 7 children had descended on another who then proceeded to 'eliminate' for lack of better words the attacking children. One Attacker was pronounced dead and the others all severely injured in the fight. Gareth was detained by the police for questioning and maintained it was self-defense and he did not mean to kill anyone, though he showed very little remorse for his actions. Due to the age of all involved this was not an easy case for a local department to deal with, so when ONI requested for Gareth to be transferred into their custody the department Captain was more than happy to oblige. Three days later he was collected and shipped to Reach. To maintain security of the SPARTAN project the police captain was told Gareth would be entered into a re-habilitation program to become an engineer within the UNSC. A poorly made flash clone was placed within a UNSC funded engineering academy which died seven weeks later of 'natural' Causes.
