He was Examiner in Law and History at Oxford University from 1869 to 1871. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1867. He unsuccessfully contested parliamentary seats on two occasions: at East Sussex in 1865 and at Devonport in 1867. He was Private Secretary to the President of the Board of Trade, Sir Stafford Northcote in 1866-1867 and to the Prime Minister (or First Lord of the Treasury) the Earl of Derby in 1867-1868. In 1891 he was elected a member of the London School Board representing Westminster serving a single three-year term. He married Lady Isabella Grace Maude, daughter of Cornwallis Maude, 1st and last Earl de Montalt of Dundrum and Clementina Elphinstone-Fleming in 1869. The couple had no children, and the barony became extinct on his death in Brighton in 1919.
