They are quite useless against the more powerful spells, though, including the Unforgivable Curses. Originally, Fred and George created Shield Hats as a joke item for their shop. However, after the Ministry of Magic ordered five hundred of them for their support staff, the Weasleys expanded the line into Shield Gloves and Shield Cloaks as well.
