Johnstone's busiest year would be in 1971, when he made three starts. Two of which were yet again at Riverside, where Johnstone finished 32nd and 20th due to issues. He fared little better at Ontario, breaking an ignition to finish 33rd. Johnstone's final start came in 1972, when he competed (not surprisingly) at Riverside. Starting 25th in the field of forty, Johnstone blew an engine a third of the way through the event and finished 26th.
