  • 2008 During the first episode of Ashes to Ashes, it is revealed that Alex Drake is the previously unnamed police psychologist who was mentioned in the finale of Life on Mars, the one who interviewed and recorded case notes of Sam Tyler's time in 1973 and studied his subsequent suicide. During the opening scenes of the first episode, Drake, while driving her daughter Molly (Grace Vance) to school is unexpectedly called to a hostage situation near the embankment of the River Thames. Upon arriving, she is informed that the hostage taker, Arthur Layton (Sean Harris) is demanding to speak to her, despite Drake having no knowledge of him. Drake eventually negotiates the release of the civilian hostage in favour of herself. This prompts Drake's frightened daughter, Molly to rush past the cordon into the middle of the situation. Arthur Layton takes hold of Molly and rushes down the steps to the river's edge, followed by Drake shortly after to find her daughter unharmed with Layton missing. Upon returning to her car she fails to notice Layton in the back, who forces her at gunpoint to a disused barge and tells her that he knew her parents who died in 1981, Tim (Andrew Clover) and Caroline Price (Amelia Bullmore). Shortly after, Layton shoots Drake in the head.

  • Alex Drake is a legendary force user who has run the gambit from Jedi to Dark Lord of the Sith under the name Darth Cain. Born on Coruscant during the seige of the Jedi Temple by the Sith Lord Darth Atredious, Alex was rescued from the carnage by a Jedi Knight named Miles Drake. Taking in the boy as his own son, Miles returned with him to his home on Naboo and raised him as a Jedi. Alex's unique skill caught the attention of a Mitsukai named Jack Makura. Jack took Alex in and taught him the secrets of the dark side so that Alex could help save his friend Sarah who had become deathly ill. Alex's quest for power ultimately led him and his friends into a trap. Alex was forced to fight the Sith Lord Ajunta Pall and in the struggle Miles and Sarah were killed while Alex lost both of his arms. Jack gave Alex new mechanical arms and offered to train him so that one day the two could turn on the Sith and Alex could have his revenge. Alex agreed and for took on the name Darth Cain, which he would later shorten to simply Cain as a means of distancing himself from the Sith. With Jack's training in the Mitsukai's "God's Powers" Cain was able to whipe out the Kumori on Chinine and eventually the Sith on Korriban. During his rampage at the Sith Temple Cain was confronted by his father, Carashi. Having never known his father Cain had no way of recognizing him. The two battled and Cain ended up killing him, only then learning what he'd done and how Jack had used him. Cain then traveled to finish Jack on Coruscant where Jack plotted the final destruction of the galaxy. After battling with and defeating his old master with the assistance of Jack's brother, Luster Makura, Cain disappeared into isolation with a simple goal: victory over pain and death.
