The Skalit' Mine Incident of 1939 cost the lives of two miners after a small tunnel branching away from the 2nd main tunnel collapsed and covered five miners. Three miners were rescued after a recue operation lasting two days. The remaining bodies were dug up three months later because the company didn't want to waste money on retrieving bodies. A few years later the two widows were compensated for this treatment.
