Determining the nature of his purpose has been obscured by the multiple explanations offered by his attorney and other associates. In a statement appearing on the conservative blog Breitbart O'Keefe claims that he did not intend to bug (illegally wiretap) her offices. What is clear is that O'Keefe seeks to create controversy rather than achieve mature expertise in public policy making. O'Keefe is part of the cohort of ambitious conservative activists created by a network of well funded conservative lobbies. Typical of his kind, O'Keefe earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy (Rutgers University 2006). Philosophy is an increasingly popular major among young conservatives because it gives them the rhetorical tools to escape discussions of the nitty-gritty reality that real Americans experience. Following graduation, he worked for the conservative lobby Leadership Institute in Arlington, Virginia.
