  • Nuclear fusion occurs when two atoms of a light element (such as Hydrogen) combine to create a single atom of a heavier element (such as Helium). Fusion of elements lighter than iron will release energy, while fusion of elements heavier than iron will always consume energy. Efficient production of energy using nuclear fusion requires light hydrogen Isotopes (such as Deuterium) that will fuse relatively easily to liberate a relatively large amount of energy.
  • Nuclear Fusion is where two nuclei join together into one. It is usually two lighter nuclei making one heavier nuclei, meaning that energy is given out. This process is the reverse of nuclear fission, but it needs more heat to start the reaction, and therefore is much more dangerous. It takes more energy to start the reaction as the nuclei both have posiitive charges which require huge amount of energy to overcome the repulsion between the two positively charged nuecli which is why high temeratures are needed. At the moment, there are no nuclear power stations using fusion, although there are plans to build one in France.
  • Nuclear fusion is a physical reaction that could be harnessed as a form of power generation; it is the very process which causes stars to shine. Helium fusion enhancement was at the center of Doctor Timicin's studies to re-vitalize the Kaelon sun. (TNG: "Half a Life" )

abstract
  • Nuclear fusion is a process in which a number of smaller atomic particles are fused into a large atomic particle, releasing a considerable amount of energy in the process. Fusion occurs naturally inside stars, and many races have created artificial fusion reactions to provide energy for their own use. For a number of years, humans were unable to create a sustained fusion reaction. As a result, humans used nuclear fission quite extensively during the 20th and 21st centuries. Humans were later able to create a sustained artificial fusion reaction, leading to the replacement of the older fission reactors. Fusion reactors became an everyday part of life in the United Federation of Planets. (TOS movie: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) On space vessels, nuclear fusion reactors provided power for general use, as well as for a ship's impulse drive. On Federation starships, reactors are modular devices, which are moveable and can be brought into position depending on the energy needs of a starship. (TNG reference: Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual) By the 24th century, fusion reactors had become small enough that many homes had their own fusion reactors to provide power for their occupants. The house of Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge had a small fusion reactor, which Commander William T. Riker estimated would last another five years. (TNG episode: "The Survivors")
  • Nuclear fusion was a human term describing the process by which multiple atomic nuclei joined together to form a heavier nucleus. This was accompanied by the release or absorption of energy. In the usual case, the energy released was such as to raise the temperature of the matrials invovled to very high levels, ionizing all of the atoms and producing a plasma state. Fusion occurred naturally in stars. Controlled fusion for human purposes was also achieved, although it was initially rather difficult to control. Because hydrogen was widely available, and hydrogen fusion could produce sufficient energy to power starships and other power needs in an advanced civilization, fusion technology was widely used in both weapons and civilian devices, mainly power plants. Royal Manticoran Navy starships, and most other navies used several fusion plants to power their systems. (HH1) The Isler Corporation was a large-scale producer of fusion reactors for the RMN. (JIR1) However, on Grayson, fission plants were used (HH2) prior to its rediscovery by Galactic civilization, since fusion techniques had been lost. Following rediscovery Grayson adopted fusion technology widely including use in hyper-capable warships such as GNS Saul and Covington. But pre-alliance Grayson fusion plants were four times as massive as modern reactors of similar output and fissionable materials were plentiful, so Grayson did not abandon its fission technology. It was useful in developing some new classes of warships. When the Manticoran Alliance introduced the new LACs in the end of the First Havenite-Manticoran War they were powered by fission plants, too. (HH8)

Often, Deuterium and Tritium (two isotopes of hydrogen) join to make Helium, a neutron and large amounts of energy. However, the temperature is needed to be over 100 millionC on Earth, whereas on the sun, where this also takes place; the pressure is a lot greater, meaning that the temperature can be lower. Fusion bombs are approximately 1,000 times more powerful than their fission counterparts. They are also called hydrogen bombs or H-bombs, as the substances used in them are both isotopes of hydrogen. As fusion needs incredibly high temperatures to take place, hydrogen bombs are activated using a fission reaction.

(TNG: "Half a Life" ) During the late 2360s, the Romulans began performing experiments with trilithium weapons. This technology, which could be used as a nuclear inhibitor, was capable of stopping fusion within a star. As of 2371, they were unable to stabilize it. However, El-Aurian scientist Doctor Tolian Soran was able to create such a weapon, which he used to create a quantum implosion in the Amargosa star. (Star Trek Generations)
