In 1965-66 McCann joined the Canadian National Team and played in the 1966 World Championship. He turned pro in 1966-67 with the Memphis Wings of the Central Hockey League. McCann played his entire professional career in the Detroit Red Wings' system. He was called up for a total of 43 NHL games from 1968 to 1975.
