  • Sal Tovella (August 14, 1928 - ) is a former NASCAR driver from Chicago, IL. He competed in fourteen Sprint Cup Series events in his career. Tovella's debut came in 1956, when he competed at Chicago. Starting 24th in the field of twenty-five, Tovella lost his brakes late in the event and struggled to a 16th place finish. Tovella's next two races wouldn't come until 1960, when he competed in the Speedweeks festivities at Daytona. Starting 21st in the Daytona 500 Qualifier event, Tovella fell a number of laps down in the race but found his 16th place finish good enough to transfer to the Daytona 500. He finished 67th in the 500 after an early engine issue. Tovella stepped it up to a four-race schedule in the 1961 season, when he started the year off again down in the Speedweeks festivities. He finished 25th in the Qualifier, but transferred anyway and wound up finishing a 14th place in the Daytona 500. He struggled, though, for the rest of the year, finishing 26th at Atlanta and 38th at Charlotte. Tovella's next two races, both in 1962, were yet again solely the Speedweeks festivities. Despite finishing an underwhelming 19th in the Qualifier, Tovella blew a head gasket in the actual 500 and finished an even worse 39th place. Tovella's best points year came during the 1963 season, when he finished 44th in points after starting the year off at Riverside. He was 32nd there, but then traveled back to Daytona. It was a solid week for the driver, finishing a 13th in the Qualifier and then finishing 17th in the actual 500. Not surprisingly, Tovella's final two races, both of which came during the 1964, were in the Daytona Speedweeks. Starting 14th in the Qualifier event, Tovella found his way yet again to the actual Daytona 500 by finishing a career-best 12th place in that race. He then concluded his career with a 23rd in the Daytona 500.
