| abstract | - Studding Sails (stud'sls) are sails attached outboard of the regular sails in a square-rigged ship to increase the amount of sail in very light winds.So, for example, if a yard is added to each end of the main yard, main mast, a studding sail is set. So, we have a studding sail on each side of the mainsail and it would be referred to as the larboard and starboard main stud'sls.
