  • Orbital Prison Unit Aurek was a maximum-security prison in the Golden Empire. Administered by the Ministry of Justice, it housed the highest-security prisoners of the Empire who had not been sentenced to death, as well as some who had been sentenced to death and were awaiting execution, but required especially secure confinement. Many Selff and Vimesk rebels were imprisoned there after the Second Battle of Shel Du, as were Chiss who refused the loyalty oath after the Chiss Rebellion. The prison was nicknamed "Black Hole" on the principle that those who went in almost never came out again.

Numerous precautions were taken to prevent prisoner escape. The prison was a space station; despite its name, it was located in deep space off major hyperlanes. It had no ships of its own and no escape pods; all guards at the facility signed no-hostage clauses, and the station was equipped with a self-destruct sequence which would allow the warden to detonate the station in the event of a successful prisoner uprising. All transfers to the station were accompanied by at least one Centurion of the Order of Keltrayu, as Centurions were expected to be able to sense anything amiss for incoming ships. Guards served three-month rotations and received top-level security clearances before serving. Most cells and common areas were equipped with stun generators, and prisoners who caused trouble could be put into carbon freeze.
