The Empire used such carriers in orbit of occupied planets, allowing for easy dispatch of fighters whenever necessary. In the year 3 BBY, the Spectres, alongside Cham Syndulla of the Free Ryloth movement, stole a Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier in orbit of Ryloth for the rebellion. The stolen ship became the flagship of Phoenix Squadron and housed their A-wings. The rebels repainted it to show its new affiliation. Later, Imperial forces under Admiral Kassius Konstantine attacked the cruiser-carrier and the rest of the Phoenix rebel fleet. The cruiser-carrier later hosted the Spectres' starship, the Ghost, which had returned with stolen fuel supplies from Horizon Base. After the inventory droid AP-5 informed Commander Jun Sato and Phoenix Leader Hera Syndulla that the Imperials had set a trap in the Yost system, the starship fled with the rest of the rebel fleet to the planet Atollon. Years later, during the New Republic's siege of the Kuat Drive Yards, Blade Squadron attacked and destroyed a light carrier during the final stages of the battle.
