Alice Catarina Matos was born in the Azores archipelago. Her family emigrated to Half Moon Bay (California) in 1903, when Alice was 6 years old. The April 18, 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a few weeks prior to Alice's ninth birthday, was a traumatic experience to her family, since they believed the end of the World had come. In 1912, the Matos family moved to Gustine, where Alice met Clarence Leonard Sanders, which became her husband in the Christmas Day of 1913.
