He finished his career in 1998–99 with the Colorado Avalanche after suffering an accumulation of injuries.

Chosen in the 3rd round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft (#50 overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks, Russell played 10 seasons, almost all of which was in the Chicago Blackhawks organization. He finished his career in 1998–99 with the Colorado Avalanche after suffering an accumulation of injuries. After retiring, Russell served as an assistant coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Halifax Mooseheads from 1999–2002. He returned to the Mooseheads in 2008 as the team's head coach and general manager and is currently in his second season in the role.
