Synopsis
  • After Shade came to London to speak with his grandson Dudley Caldecott, he found the man deeply involved in a secret cabal led by a Miles St. Aubrey, who has since captured Shade and revealed that by their secret rites, they have found a way to control the Egyptian gods. Apparently, these beings came to Memphis, Egypt thousands of years ago, and were worshipped as gods, incorporated into the existing lore. They were tyrants, however, and the people rose up. The people failed, but a powerful mage found a way to control them, and St. Aubrey and his group have somehow discovered that way. None of this is of interest to Shade, however. All he wants to know is how his powers are being dampened. The truth is that neither Dudley nor Miles knows how the entities are doing it, but it is they that are doing it. Their organization began probing them in 1936, and only succeeded in killing one of the entities. At this, one of the entities themselves responds, introducing herself as Nhut. Though her husband was killed, she was unable to take revenge or escape. Angrily, St. Aubrey warns them not to communicate with each other. Dudley reveals that the entities were discovered by his father, Albert Caldecott, whom Shade met in 1901. Since their discovery, the sole benefit that these entities have given the group is that they somehow emit an energy that aids the group's endeavours, like a kind of luck. Naturally, the reason for the secrets is that those endeavours are illegitimate: drugs, arms, children, germs. In fact, they have planned a terrorist attack to occur at three o'clock that day, in the hopes of reignite fear, and increase arms deals. Though they thought him incapacitated, Shade reveals that he can still become a like a shadow to escape. Apparently, the entities are not strong enough to hold him. So, Miles orders that some of their power be returned, preventing any further attempts by Shade to escape. They drag Shade to their ceremonial chamber, eager to show him what they have planned, but again, he begins to fade into shadow, prompting Miles to shout for more power to the entities. His power dampened again, Miles and Dudley reveal their intent to test him and try to learn the derivation of both his immortality and his shadow power. And, in order to baptize their recent acquisition - Shade himself - they must perform another sacrifice, having chosen an innocent street girl. Shade begs them to spare her life, but he gets no sympathy. In response, he demonstrates that he can still fade into shadow, and again, Miles calls for more power to the entities. Smirking, Shade points out that by giving the entities more power, they have lost control over them. Without hesitation, the entities flatten Miles under their fists. Unfortunately, the entities' next move is to rise up and terrorize London.
