| abstract | - John Hamby is a former NASCAR driver from Columbia, SC. He competed in fourteen Sprint Cup Series events in his career, earning two top-tens. Hamby's debut came during the 1958 season, when he competed at his home track in Columbia. Hamby used his local skills well during the race, starting 13th and completing all but twenty laps in the race to finish 8th. He also tried his luck a few months later at Myrtle Beach, but an early engine failure left him 19th there. Hamby did not return to the sport until the 1961 season, and even then had quite a struggle of it. Two DNFs through four starts significantly hurt Hamby's program, as he only finished in the top-twenty once during the year: a 16th place finish at Martinsville. His woes were exasperated by a last (21st) place finish at South Boston and a 26th place run at North Wilkesboro. Hamby only ran three races during the 1962 season, but improved his points placement to a career-high 79th place. His average finish was respectable with a 17.3, only having one DNF throughout his season. Hamby ran quite well in his first trip to Hickory, finishing that race in 11th. He also tacked on an 18th place run at Concord and a 23rd place showing at Bristol in his first races at those tracks. Hamby's final five races all came during the 1964 season, when Hamby got together with Curtis Crider's team. The pairing had mixed results. Hamby ran quite well at times, recording a 10th place effort at South Boston and then showing 12th at Asheville. But mechanical issues in the other three starts only left him with a best finish of 18th (at Concord, his career finale) during that stretch, ultimately ending out Hamby's career.
