| abstract | - Narcissa Cassiopeia Snape (née Black; formerly Malfoy) (b. 17 December 1959) was a pure-blood witch and youngest daughter of Cygnus Black III and Druella Black; younger sister of Bellatrix Lestrange and Andromeda Tonks. She was the widow of Lucius Malfoy and wife of Severus Snape; she was the mother of Draco Malfoy, Septimus Snape and Eileen Snape. From 1971 to 1978, Narcissa attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as part of Slytherin house. Born into the Black family, Narcissa lived a difficult albeit monetarily comfortable life as she struggled to fulfill the expectations of being the daughter of Cygnus Black, as well as the competition with her elder sister, Bellatrix. Narcissa had the closest relationship to Andromeda out of all the Blacks, and was crushed when she was disowned, although the two secretly kept in contact via owl. While at school, Narcissa fell in to the popular crowd within Slytherin and eventually became the most popular, and arguably the most beautiful witch in Hogwarts. She was the centre of all gossip within Slytherin; nothing happened in the house without Narcissa knowing about it. When in her fifth year, Narcissa began dating Lucius Malfoy, whom she fell in love with and became engaged to the next year. The same year, Narcissa and her cousin Regulus became close to Severus Snape, who had been turned into a Werewolf by the Marauders, a group of Gryffindor bullies who had attempted a prank of Severus. Narcissa and Lucius became engaged after his graduation. However, they feared Theodore Nott, a Slytherin infamous for bedding much of the female student body, would attempt to force himself upon her; as Lucius was graduated and could not protect her, he hired Severus to keep her safe by posing as her boyfriend. Although Narcissa was initially heartbroken that she had to pretend she had no feelings for Lucius, she became close to Severus.
