Also teams received some winnings for beginning the race, but unless they went at least one complete lap they received nothing.) Starting 44th in the forty-five car field, Gazaway only completed one lap before falling out with rear end issues. He finished last (45th) as a result.

Despite that, Gazaway remained in NASCAR for a number of years. In 1963, he joined NASCAR's Technical Inspection crew. He eventually became Cup (then known as the Grand National Division) Competition Director in the 1968 season, was promoted to National Director of Racing Operations in 1979,and was made Technical Vice President in 1984, which position he retained until his retirement in 1987.
