The next race, at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Schoonover was driving when on lap 129, Schoonver spun and struck a dirt bank on the back straightaway of the track. Sadly, Schoonover did not survive the accident. He was 32 years old. His death the first fatality at the Atlanta track's existence.
