He was a long-time member of the German National Team, playing for them at the World Championships in 1938, 1939, and 1953, and at the Olympic Games in 1952 and 1956. He also enjoyed a club career that spanned over 20 years, playing for various different clubs. Most notably Zehlendorfer Wespen, LTTC Rot-Weiß Berlin, and SC Riessersee. Hoffmann was inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.
