Over the last five years the University of Dundee has taken a leading position in the development of Comics Studies, with several courses at undergraduate level and an innovative postgraduate Masters programme in Comic Studies. We also attract a large number of PhD students doing work on comics and graphic novels. We have achieved this through a great deal of work and commitment, and we expect the successful applicant to match our ambitions. You should have a strong record of high-quality research and innovative teaching, and demonstrate potential for leadership. You will also be expected to teach on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Humanities, apply for external research funding, build networks and help attract postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level. Public engagement and academic impact are also key strengths. We are involved in community outreach and event planning, running activities such as The Dundee Comics Day, events at the Literary Festival, Dundee Comics Expo, various exhibition launches, and working with schools and at Comics conferences and conventions around the UK. You will be expected to contribute fully to our plans and activities, and develop strategies for public engagement and impact. The comics courses delivered at Dundee adopt a range of critical, historical and theoretical approaches, and some include practical/creative outcomes such as the creation of comic art. This blend of critical and creative work is one of the most exciting aspects of Comic Studies at Dundee, and we have our own comics imprint, UniVerse Comics, which publishes student and staff creative work. The Comics team act as editors for these publications. We are also home to the Scottish Centre for Comics Studies and The Dundee Comics Creative Space, which you will contribute to and will be expected to help run. We anticipate that you will also contribute to the editing of a comics journal and will be involved in the running of major international conferences. Another key area is comics and education and we have some exciting and innovative collaborations growing in this area. Knowledge and experience of comics creation and publishing would be valuable. However, you will be able to teach widely across a range of comics modules, covering a wide spread of comics history, with in-depth knowledge of many genres, creators, and publishers. There will also be scope to create and run modules that are specifically focused on your research specialism in comics. You will teach on undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the Programme, and will contribute to collaborative teaching and research initiatives within and beyond the School of Humanities. You are expected to possess strong primary teaching and research interests in one or more of the areas outlined above. You must have a PhD in a relevant discipline. Purpose & Principal Duties To support the delivery of the Comics Studies Masters, undergraduate modules, and the supervision of Comics PhD students.To produce high quality research publications, grant applications, projects and collaborations that achieve international distinction in your specialist area.Design and delivery of a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules within the School of Humanities.
