  • A Light Machine Gun (commonly known as an LMG) is a machine gun designed to be operated by a single soldier (as opposed to a squad-operated machine gun that requires multiple soldiers to operate). Common examples of LMGs used in World War II include the FG 42, the M1918A2 BAR (or Browning Automatic Rifle, which was more of a rifle than an LMG), and the Soviet-made DP LMG. Light Machine Guns of the WWII era were almost always fed ammunition with a magazine and had bipods for more accurate fire.

(Findings at CTU) During Day 3, Stephen Saunders's men fired a light machine gun from a helicopter into the MI6 headquarters in Los Angeles, killing Trevor Tomlinson, Diana White and several other members of staff. The following morning, his men again fired from a helicopter as Saunders was escaping from Jack Bauer. ("Day 3: 5:00am-6:00am", "10:00am-11:00am")

Light machine guns have the ammo and similar power to a Heavy machine gun, but have more damage and similar capacity to a Submachine Gun; however, performance and behavior has fluctuated between games. While most Light Machine guns hold over 75 rounds in their magazines and have lethargic handling characteristics, there have been some exceptions to this trend. • Light Machine Guns (or LMG) are a class of small arms that are either adaptations of an assault rifle (generally with a larger magazine, a longer barrel, reinforced receivers, etc.), or a weapon design in its own right, chambered for an intermediate rifle (assault rifle) cartridge. Light machine guns are man-portable, and may need one or two operators. They can either be magazine-fed or belt-fed, or have the capability for both. Light machine guns usually fire from an open bolt, as this prevents rounds from cooking off due to overheating; however, there are a few exceptions to this rule, the RPK being one of them.

A more recent one is in the form of the Stoner63, which has only a 30 round magazine, but reloads almost twice as fast compared to any other Light machine gun in its respective game. Another big exception is the Chain SAW, which allows the player to move faster, and features a very tight hip-fire cone, at the cost of a smaller belt magazine and the inability to truly aim down the sights. The drawbacks of light machine guns are that their handling characteristics are universally poor. Due to their weight, they will usually cause the player to move much slower than compared to other weapons. In addition, they take a long time to aim, and most Light machine guns take very long times to reload. To compound this weakness, the Light Machine guns usually have very large hip-fire cones by default, making them extremely ineffective at close quarters. It is recommended to have a backup weapon to fall back on if the player were to get in said situation. Due to the extended capacity and damage output of Light machine guns, Light Machine guns are generally most effective in Medium-long range gunfights, where their extended ranges and large capacities allow players to easily outperform lightly armed enemies, such as Shotgun users and Submachine Gunners.
