Bei der Einweihung urteilte FIFA-Präsident Joseph Blatter: „Dieses Stadion ist ein Pilotprojekt für die ganze Welt.“ Die UEFA verlieh der Veltins-Arena den Status eines Fünf-Sterne-Stadions. Der Kommentar der UEFA-Delegation lautete: „Der Veranstaltungsort wird den Anforderungen mehr als gerecht und könnte sogar als ‚Sechs-Sterne-Stadion' bewertet werden.“ Daher dürfen in der Veltins-Arena Endspiele der UEFA Champions League und des UEFA-Pokals ausgerichtet werden.
