Snow is delighted, but takes notice of the look Regina gives her. Snow asks what, and the Queen tells her they are at the edge of the Dark Forest, trying to find the one person who could stop their imminent doom and save her unborn child, and yet the two of them stop to smell the roses. Snow points out that it's a snowbell, and David smiles. Regina says she doesn't care if they're "dancing daffodils", because she needs to destroy her sister, and so does Snow, and if Rumple, whom she refers to as a "babbling mad man", sent them on a wild goose chase... she can't finish her sentence for she is caught off-guard

The Bandit Boss, and the Rogue Bandit, operated out of their respective headquarters until the future Lady Montbarron and her companions drove them from the kingdom. Close to the travelers' camp was an abandoned Dwarven quarry and gold mining operation. They were likely killed by trolls.

The phrase "Dark Forest" appeared less as a reference to the afterlife in later novels, with the most recent usage occurring in Taggerung. Phrases such as "sunny slopes and quiet streams" have seemingly replaced it. A "Lord of Dark Forest" is spoken of in the mole song "Wurpledown Durr," as snatching away the titular character to Dark Forest. "Hellgates" seems to serve as the vermin equivalent, though whether it refers to the same place or not is difficult to determine. According to Ermath, Vulpuz is the ruler of Hellgates; at other times this domain's ruler has been referred to as the Dark One. Despite this, when Fortunata, a conniving and duplicitous fox was slain, Lady Amber told her to "tell your deceitful tales to whoever meets you at the gates of Dark Forest."

The Bandit Boss, and the Rogue Bandit, operated out of their respective headquarters until the future Lady Montbarron and her companions drove them from the kingdom. The Lescanzi travelers also reported encountering Seck within the Dark Forest around this time. Nong's daughter, Sikra, was carried away by these creatures in the middle of the night, and her cousin, Boryev, pursued in order to rescue her. The archer, Phaedriel, had chased a group of Goblin thieves into the forest, but lost them amidst the trees. She eventually joined up with the passing band of heroes, who themselves sought a group of Goblins who had made off with the Staff of Stars. Close to the travelers' camp was an abandoned Dwarven quarry and gold mining operation. They were likely killed by trolls. Further down, near the Eastern Swamp, lies a branch in the road. One of them leads to the cave of the Bandit Boss and his treasure hoard, while the other one leads to a small castle, built in the same style as Castle Hiroth, which is home to the Rogue Bandit. Hidden in the depths of the forest is a pathway that leads to a walled garden, wherein dwells the Lost Witch. At the back of the garden lies a mausoleum, within which are four chests, surrounding a raised dais, where a single coffin sits.

Snow says it's Glinda, and she opens the door and goes through it, entering an unseen space. Charming yells, "No!", and then follows her inside. Regina sneers and walks through the door, as she makes light of the "portal with a cheap cloaking spell"... but then she finds herself on the other side of the door, not having entered the magically protected space at all. Irritated, she walks through the door frame again and shuts it. ("A Curious Thing")
