abstract
  • Freedom Is An Opinion/Critters is the debut album by dark ambient band Nothing The Black Celebration. It is one of the darkest, least accessible releases by Nothing The Black Celebration, and considered the pinnacle of the Lovian extreme metal scene. Freedom Is An Opinion/Critters is the result of combining two EPs that were never released. Freedom Is An Opinion consisted of the tracks "Freedom Is An Opinion", "When The Plane Collapsed, My Children Burned To Death", "Dialogue With The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" and "Dialogue With The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse II". Critters consisted of seven tracks, called "Minutes I-III", "Minutes IV-V", "Passage Through The Hall of Saints", "Humans Can't Scream Pt. 2", "Whenever I Look At The Sky, All I See Is Volcanoes of Noise", "Eternal Damnation in the Inner Circles of Hell" and "Your Life Will Be Brighter, Your Days Will Be Longer, If You Buy My Soul". Those tracks were all combined in one track, called "Passage Through The Hall of Saints". "Freedom Is An Opinion" is a musique concrète piece consisting of a radio announcement overlayed with amplifier feedback and a advertisment jingle that resembles the American anthem. The other tracks are heavy, guitar-ridden tracks that consist of screamed vocals and tremolo-picking guitar riffs. The whole album is characterized by blast-beat drumming and occasional bursts of plunderphonical sampling. The album was voted the best Lovian album of the 1990s by readers of Tone Factory.
