- The battle of Narva was the first battle in Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky's northern conquest's against the Danish. The battle of Narva was the first documented success of a cavalry army in eastern Europe. Previously, infantry armies had dominated the European military scene. The battle of Narva changed commanders perspectives pertaining cavalry, and their use on the battlefield. The Danish had firmly established themselves in the Narva region, situated close to the city of Novgorod. A force of six hundred men marshalled at the border, under captain Grim. Alexander Nevsky, hearing of this, rode north to combat them, and stop the Danish before they had enough men to besiege the undermanned capital at Novgorod. Nevsky could only muster four hundred cavalry, such was the poor condition of the Russian military in the 1250's. However, amonsgt these men, were the fabled Boyar's, who comprised roughly half of the Russian army. The Danish army was primarily infantry based, with a strong core of swordsmen and archers, with only a few cavalry elements used for scouting. As the Russian army neared the Danish camp, the Grand Duke split his army into three, with himself and a core of cavalry militia in the centre, and his Boyar's on each flank. Captain Grim deployed his army in a small formation, archers in front, followed by infantry and cavalry. As they advanced forward, Nevsky ordered his Boyar's to close in on either side of the Danish, and they smashed into both flanks, whilst Nevsky lead his own contingent into the heart of the enemy. The archers could only fire off a handful of volleys before they were overrun. The battle quickly turned into a rout, but the majority of the Danish force found themselves trapped between the three Russian cavalry contingents, and were butchered. The few that did manage to escape were hounded by the Boyars and suffered apalling casualties. The battle of Narva was a resounding Russian sucess. A smaller force anhilating a fortified enemy after marching for six months, and taking minimal casualties. The battle paved the way for eastern Cavalry armies and revolutionised Russian military thinking.
