abstract
  • Abasard and his family were moved from Drene to the Awl'dan plains, land recently appropriated by the Letherii from the Awl. There, Abasard became a shepherd of Rodara. Both he and his entire family had greatly benefited, emotionally, mentally and physically, by this wholesome change in their environment. Abasard, especially, was positively affected by the extraordinary sense of unlimited space and by the possibilities that seemed to be opening-up for him and his kin. One night, however, as Abasard was guarding the Rodara under his care, he realized that the animals were in the process of being stolen. Finding his herding dogs killed, Abasard, frightened, ran back toward the main drover camp for help. Once there, however, he found that the camp and the people in it were being attacked by two huge two-legged reptiles, one armed with very large swords. Seeing his family's tent being destroyed (with his family inside) and his ten-year old sister, Stayandi, pelting towards him, desperate to escape the slaughter, Abasard ran directly towards the demon-like beast which was chasing after her, preparing to strike the fiend as hard as he could with his staff. Although his sister was able to get away, Abasard was cut down in short order and rapidly bled to death. Abasard's last thoughts were those of thankfulness for having been able to experience the seemingly endless freedom and space of his new home.
