McElreath's debut came in 1964, when he competed at Daytona. Starting 6th in the Daytona 500 Qualifier event, McElreath stayed out of trouble to finish 13th and transfer into the Daytona 500. He ran respectably in the 500 despite a crash, finishing a mid-pack 25th before rounding out his year 15th at Atlanta.

McElreath's final career race waited until 1971 to happen, when the driver competed at Ontario. Starting 25th in the field of fifty-one, McElreath lost a rear end gear near halfway in route to a disappointing 36th place run.
