  • Charles M. Schulz on Charlie Brown Charles "Charlie" Brown (called Chuck by Peppermint Patty and sometimes referred to as Charles by Marcie) is the central and main protagonist in the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz. He has been hailed as one of the best cartoon characters of all time, and he has become one of the great American archetypes and the only Peanuts character to have done so. Personality-wise, he is gentle, insecure, and lovable. Charlie Brown possesses significant determination and hope, but frequently fails because of his insecurities. While he can be smart, he over-thinks things and this often gives him a tendency to procrastinate. While all of the permanent characters are his friends, he is often ostracized by them, and three of his friends even bully him. Many of them (including the bullies), however, follow him as the manager of a baseball team, and that is where Charlie Brown's greatest skill, good leadership, is displayed. He leads the baseball team and keeps hoping for a victory despite their numerous failures and painful letdowns, yelling words of admirable encouragement to his players, leading them to the next game. Charlie Brown has many more traits, and his character is very deep. Charlie Brown inherited a massive number of traits from Schulz, right down to his first name. His nickname "Charlie" and his last name "Brown" were given for Charlie Brown, one of Schulz's co-workers at the Art Instruction Inc. He and Snoopy are the only characters to appear in every TV special and movie.

  • Brown first appeared in "E. Peterbus Unum". When the guys are saying what they got with their tax return, Charlie, dressed unconvincingly as a ghost, said "I got a rock", referring to the It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! when he kept getting rocks instead of candy. In "Ready, Willing, and Disabled", Stewie groaned like Brown when the money clip was claimed. His face becoming nothing but a wide open mouth. Charlie also appears in "Mother Tucker", behaving abominably at the Peanuts reunion where his guest is a coarse crackwhore, whom he calls a skank. He breaks down in tears because Snoopy and Woodstock are dead, the strong implication being that he had supplied the drugs which led to their demise. He claims that he doesn't care about Woodstock, but that Snoopy did not deserve it. When Herbert gets a bath from Meg instead of Chris in "Play It Again, Brian", he exclaims "Aww rats!" in the same manner as Charlie Brown. In "Brian's Got a Brand New Bag", Peter kicks Lucy van Pelt for pulling the football away from Brown, forcing her to let him finally kick it, then kicking her again for not being a licensed therapist. Here, Charlie Brown is voiced by Jack Samson.
  • The Peanuts gang began in 1950-2000
  • Charlie Brown is the central protagonist of the long-running comic strip Peanuts, syndicated in daily and Sunday newspapers in numerous countries all over the world. One of the great American archetypes, he is a very well-received and well-known cartoon character. Charlie Brown is characterized as a person who frequently suffers, and as a result, is usually nervous and lacks self-confidence. He shows both pessimistic and optimistic attitudes: on some days, he is reluctant to go out because his day might just be spoiled, but on others, he hopes for the best and tries as much as he can to accomplish things. The character's creator, Charles M. Schulz, has said of the character that "[He] must be the one who suffers, because he is a caricature of the average person. Most of us are much more acquainted with losing than winning." Despite this, Charlie Brown does not always suffer, as he has experienced some happy moments and victories through the years, and he has sometimes uncharacteristically shown self-assertiveness despite his often nervousness. Schulz has also said: "I like to have Charlie Brown to be the focal point of almost every story." Lee Mendelson, producer of the majority of the Peanuts television specials, has said that "He [Charlie Brown] was, and is, the ultimate survivor in overcoming bulliness—Lucy or otherwise." The character, as Schulz frequently said and addressed, is inspired by some of his painful experiences in life.
