  • The 1959-07 was a Grand National (now Nextel Cup) event held at Wilson Speedway on March 29, 1959. In one of the rare instances in NASCAR history, (excluding the Bud Shootout), drivers had to draw to determine their starting positions. Junior Johnson drew 22nd, but finished 1st after taking the lead late and holding off Curtis Turner by three seconds. The race is witnessed by 8,800 spectators on the ground. The track's wooden grandstand had caught fire before the race, and finally disappeared into ash before the event. Yet the race went right on schedule. Eventual sesaon champ Lee Petty finished 4th.Stats
