  • Catch My Breath (Songfic)

  • This is a songfic by Firey. OA is Kelly Clarkson I felt the cold breeze brush past me as I stared at the land below me. This is my home... RainClan, a true honor to be here with you. The swamps to the left were MarshClan, an honorable Clan that has been in war with RainClan for years now. I felt the water rush up against my sodden legs and shivered. Taking a step away from the view, I headed down to the RainClan camp. On the way, I spotted Grayheart. The tom was shuffling past the other warriors, heading out for some afternoon hunting. I sighed too. "I'll miss the warm afternoons." "I will too."

I watched him go, feeling a twist in my heart. He's such a loyal tom, but he never pays attention to me. His goal is to protect RainClan with his last breath. "Splashtail, are you going to sit there all day?" My best friend Wishfire laughed. "You've been staring at the swamps below our camp for a real long time now." I cast Grayheart one last glance, then turned around. "I'm not going to stand here forever." I muttered. "I'm just thinking about how long we've been in war with MarshClan." Wishfire shrugged. "I saw you staring at Grayheart too. Are you still chasing after him?" I gave her a swift glance. "You know me too well, Wishfire." I mewed, purring as she butted me with her shoulder. "Well those glances you give Grayheart are so obvious. I'm surprised he hasn't noticed yet." Wishfire stared at the still trembling gorse tunnel. "Hm, I think there's a storm coming soon." Wishfire was my best friend who supported me with her heart. Her brother, Stonefur, liked my own sister, Heartflash. It was pretty cute how they blushed when they were near each other. "How long until you think Stonefur's going to ask Heartflash out?" I mewed, watching Wishfire's brother stalk across the camp clearing. My friend snorted. "My brother's a wimp. He's scared that Heartflash will reject him if he asks her out. Obviously he hasn't seen the looks she gives him when he passes by." I laughed. "I can't wait to see their faces when they finally do it. Heartflash's pretty outgoing, but I don't think she has the courage to face your brother either." We shared tongues with each other, feeling the green-leaf sun beat on our fur. "It's the last of green-leaf," my friend sighed, "The next storm is going to mark the start of leaf-fall." I sighed too. "I'll miss the warm afternoons." "I will too." I felt like MarshClan was a cruel Clan, taking our cats prisoners and beating them. But I knew we did the same thing. Was everything that I believed before a lie? Wishfire stood up and stretched, waving her tail in farewell. I watched her go, feeling an empty spot in my heart cracked. I always felt lonely. My sister was always busy with Stonefur, and Wishfire never stayed with me for long. Even she had someone to dream about. But as Grayheart padded into camp, I couldn't muster the courage to walk up to him and talk to him. He dropped his raven at the fresh-kill pile, and to my surprise, he padded over to me. "Hey, Splashtail." He mewed as he sat down to rest. I stared at him. "H-hey-y." I stuttered. He licked his flank, feeling at ease. "You seem a bit down today, Splashtail. What happened to the bubbly she-cat that I knew?" I let my lips form a smile and I purred. "I'm thinking about MarshClan. I mean we've always thought they were brutal cats, but aren't we the same?" Grayheart shrugged. "I don't know, is that what you think?" I nodded, unable to keep it back. "It's what I think, but that doesn't mean it's true." I scuffled my paws, embarrassed with myself for letting such a thought roam out. He didn't seem to mind. "I see why you think that, it's hard to believe that such a 'perfect' Clan like ours could be like MarshClan. We aren't as perfect as we seem." His blue eyes watched the cats milling around in the clearing. "We are just as harsh as MarshClan in some ways." We obviously didn't know what was ahead of us, but I knew that MarshClan had something in store for RainClan, my home Clan. The doubt in my mind weighed heavy, and I couldn't shake it off. There must be a way we could stop this war and change the way we act. There must be a way.
