The residency program is primarily based out of the Duluth Family Practice Center, where the residents see patients on an outpatient basis and perform minor procedures. The residents primarily perform the in hospital work at St. Lukes and St. Mary's hospitals, both located in downtown Duluth. Faculty for the residency program include Thomas Day, MD as program director, and Roger Waage, MD, David Hutchinson, MD, Ann Doberstein, MD, Kim Krueger, MD, and Meghan Mahoney, MD, MS Ed all as assistant directors. The residency also offers direct assess to many ancilliary services, including diabetes education, nutrition counseling, psychiatry, and behavoral medicine. HISTORY After 50 years of training generalists in two highly regarded internships, the specialty of Family Medicine was established. Leaders of the Duluth medical community, the hospitals, and Medical School came together to create the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program. Top administrators from St. Luke's Hospital of Duluth, St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic Health System, the University of Minnesota-Duluth School of Medicine, and Community Leaders meet quarterly as equal members of the Duluth Graduate Medical Education Council, Inc.
