The Ranama lived in the canals of molten protodermis in Ta-Metru in Metru Nui. After the Great Cataclysm occurred, the Ranama were forced to migrate to the island of Mata Nui. Mata Nui's population of Ranama was forced to migrate back to Metru Nui after the Toa Nuva unleashed the Bohrok Swarms on the island. The Ranama succesfully arrived to the Matoran Universe, where they resided for some time. After Teridax was killed by a fragment of Aqua Magna, the Ranama and the other Rahi will have to join the mass exodus to Spherus Magna to escape the Matoran Universe before it finally breaks down in order to survive.

The Ranama later migrated and thrived in the heat of Ta-Wahi on Mata Nui, where they swam through the lava flows. To obtain food, a Ranama would wait beneath the molten lava for an unwary Nui-Rama to fly past, then leap forth and ensnare the insect with its long and sticky tongue. Most Matoran knew better than to approach one of these fiery Rahi, but praised them, for they reduced the population of the deadly Nui-Rama.
